Repetitive sin Q&A

fallen heart

Jacked up hearts

Here’s one reader’s question in response to a post titled Repetitive sin pt. 1.  Is there something jacked up in our hearts that causes us to repeat sin?

Fallen, broken humanity is jacked!

Jesus said it this way, “For out of the heart comes evil thoughts, sexual sins, lying, … (Matt. 15:19 NIV).” Bad behaviors reflect heart desease.

Trying hard to be a good person; succeeding at external morality doesn’t change the “jacked heart.”  Thats why we need Jesus.  We don’t change ourselves from the outside in.  Jesus changes us from the inside out.

Paul addresses the sin problem in Romans 7 .

Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.

Paul says with his mind (inner self) he serves the law of God.  He’d been changed on the inside by Jesus.  But, the flesh serves the law of sin.  Believers struggle with sin!

Do you feel the struggle?  Paul did.

He felt wretched.

Some Christians claim to escape this struggle but they are self-deluded fakers.

Your’e in good company when you long to escape “wretchedness.”

NKJV Matt 18:22 “but up to seventy times seven”Do you think this could refer to repetitive sin?

  2. Dan Rockwell Says:

Chuck, interesting connection. I’d never thought of that passage in this context. But, if you’re suggesting that God’s forgiveness goes on and on (70×7) then I can buy that.

    thanks for jumping in..

Oh, I saw that you connected with Ed Underwood… glad you did

Good stuff bro. Dan. I noticed one Bible teacher pointed out that the word “wretched” Paul used there is only used one other time in all the NT. It is by Jesus in Rev.3 when addressing the Laodicean believers! They thought they were A-OK, but He told them they were (among other things) wretched! I’d rather be wretched & know it with Paul in Ro.7 than wretched & NOT know it!

I did a search of wretched and can confirm what you heard. It’s only in the Bible twice. That’s way cool. Thanks for pointing that out!

      All the best
