Commandment Keeping?

Not long ago, during a conversation, a church goer explained that in Sunday School the teacher asked them write down all the 10 commandments they could recall from memory.  This person wrote down 8 of the 10.  Then the class was encouraged to pick one of the 10 and make that commandment their 2010 New Year’s Resolution.  This person explained that it was difficult to choose one since they kept all 10.  They said this, even though they could only recall 8 of the 10.

I’m pretty impressed with anyone who can recall 8 of the 10 commandments.  Never mind keeping them.  But it’s too bad keeping them won’t help.  Too bad they are not the guide and rule for believers.

Doing doesn’t change us.  In other words, we don’t change by modifying our behvior.  But behavior conforms to who we are on the inside.  I’m saying you can paint the outhouse with new paint but it’s still full of crap.

Trusting Jesus gives life and sets us free.  I’m not just talking about the moment you trusted Jesus.  I’m talking about learning to trust Him every day.  Believers who begin by trusting in Jesus alone and then revert to commandment keeping live below their position and forfeit richness of life.

Living for Jesus isn’t a list of rules…it is a way of life…not always easy and by me, not always done…Fortunately, we are forgiven when we fail. Praise God!

Thanks Jack. You’re right on man!… you back from FL. or still enjoying 40 degree weather down there 😉

    ROTFL…about your “outhouse” analogy!
Why DO so many people/churches revert back to striving for “commandment keeping” as the rule for life on this side of the cross??? Do they think of it as an easy way to know what God expects of them (as if they are different for the Jews and could actually keep the commandments!)…or what?
I live in a small rural town in Oklahoma and several folks in town have that yard sign posted with the ten commandments. Sad!
    Grace is sooooooooo refreshing…
I’m new to your site today and loving what I am reading so far!
